Spin Rate

How fast the ball rotates around its axis, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM).

Also known as:Total Spin, RPM

Full Definition

Spin rate is the rotational speed of the golf ball immediately after impact. Backspin creates lift that keeps the ball in the air longer, while also creating drag that slows the ball. Too much spin launches the ball high and causes it to "balloon," losing distance. Too little spin causes the ball to fall out of the sky quickly.

Optimal Range

Driver: 2000-3000 RPM | 7-iron: 6000-7500 RPM | Wedges: 8000-10000 RPM

Why It Matters

Spin rate is the other half of the launch window. Combined with launch angle, it determines your shot's trajectory. Low spin with low launch = knuckleball. High spin with high launch = balloon ball. The goal is optimizing both for maximum carry.
