Attack Angle

The vertical direction the clubhead is moving at impact—up, down, or level.

Also known as:Angle of Attack, AoA

Full Definition

Attack angle (also called angle of attack or AoA) measures the vertical direction of the clubhead's movement at impact. A negative attack angle means the club is descending (hitting down); positive means ascending (hitting up). Attack angle significantly influences launch conditions, spin, and distance, especially with the driver.

Optimal Range

Driver: 0° to +5° (up) | Irons: -2° to -6° (down) | Wedges: -4° to -8° (down)

Why It Matters

Attack angle is one of the most important metrics for driver distance. Hitting up on the ball with a driver reduces spin and optimizes launch. With irons, a descending blow compresses the ball and creates the spin needed for control.
