Landing Angle
The angle at which the ball descends when it lands.
Full Definition
Landing angle is the angle of the ball's descent relative to the ground when it lands. A steeper landing angle (higher number) means the ball is coming down more vertically and will stop more quickly. Landing angle is influenced by launch conditions and spin—higher launch and more spin produce steeper descents.
Optimal RangeGeneral guidance based on tour averages. Your optimal range depends on swing speed, physical attributes, and individual technique. Many golfers succeed with metrics outside these ranges.
Driver: 35-42° | 7-iron: 45-50° | Wedges: 48-55°
Why It Matters
Landing angle determines how much the ball runs out after landing. Steeper landing angles mean more stopping power. For approach shots, you want enough landing angle to hold the green. For drives, shallower angles maximize roll.
Related Terms
Apex (Peak Height)
The highest point the ball reaches during its flight.
Roll
The distance the ball travels on the ground after landing.
Spin Rate
How fast the ball rotates around its axis, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM).
Descent Angle
The angle of the ball's downward path as it approaches landing.
