Spin Loft
The difference between dynamic loft and attack angle, which determines spin rate.
Full Definition
Spin loft is the 3D angle between the club's direction of travel (attack angle) and the face orientation (dynamic loft) at impact. This gap is what creates backspin. A larger spin loft creates more spin but less ball speed (more glancing blow). A smaller spin loft creates less spin but more ball speed (more compression).
Formula
Optimal RangeGeneral guidance based on tour averages. Your optimal range depends on swing speed, physical attributes, and individual technique. Many golfers succeed with metrics outside these ranges.
Driver: 12-17° | 7-iron: 30-35° | Wedges: 45-55°
Why It Matters
Spin loft explains why attack angle matters so much. With a driver, hitting up (-3° to +5° attack angle) reduces spin loft and produces optimal launch conditions. With irons, a steeper attack angle increases spin for stopping power on greens.
Related Terms
Dynamic Loft
The actual loft of the clubface at impact, which differs from the club's stated loft.
Attack Angle
The vertical direction the clubhead is moving at impact—up, down, or level.
Spin Rate
How fast the ball rotates around its axis, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM).
Compression
How much the ball deforms against the clubface at impact.
