Dynamic Loft
The actual loft of the clubface at impact, which differs from the club's stated loft.
Full Definition
Dynamic loft is the loft angle of the clubface at the moment of impact. It's almost always different from the club's static (manufactured) loft due to shaft lean, face rotation, and wrist position. Forward shaft lean decreases dynamic loft; a flipping motion increases it. Dynamic loft directly influences launch angle and spin rate.
Optimal RangeGeneral guidance based on tour averages. Your optimal range depends on swing speed, physical attributes, and individual technique. Many golfers succeed with metrics outside these ranges.
Driver: 12-17° | 7-iron: 24-28° | PW: 38-44°
Why It Matters
Dynamic loft explains why two golfers with the same club can have vastly different ball flights. Excessive dynamic loft creates high, spinny shots. Too little creates low, penetrating shots that may lack stopping power.
Related Terms
Attack Angle
The vertical direction the clubhead is moving at impact—up, down, or level.
Spin Loft
The difference between dynamic loft and attack angle, which determines spin rate.
Launch Angle
The vertical angle at which the ball leaves the clubface.
Shaft Lean
How much the shaft is leaning forward or backward at impact.
