Compression

How much the ball deforms against the clubface at impact.

Full Definition

Compression refers to how much the golf ball squashes against the clubface during impact. Higher speed swings compress the ball more. Proper compression (matching ball construction to your swing speed) optimizes energy transfer. The term is also used to describe the feeling of a well-struck iron shot.

Why It Matters

Compression affects feel and performance. A ball that's too hard for your swing speed won't compress enough, losing energy transfer. A ball that's too soft may compress too much, also losing energy. Matching ball compression to swing speed optimizes distance.
