Shaft Lean
How much the shaft is leaning forward or backward at impact.
Full Definition
Shaft lean measures the angle of the shaft relative to vertical at impact. Forward shaft lean (hands ahead of the ball) decreases dynamic loft and creates a more compressed, lower-launching shot. Backward lean (hands behind) increases dynamic loft. Proper shaft lean varies by club—more with irons, neutral to slightly forward with driver.
Optimal RangeGeneral guidance based on tour averages. Your optimal range depends on swing speed, physical attributes, and individual technique. Many golfers succeed with metrics outside these ranges.
Irons: 8-12° forward | Driver: 0-4° forward
Why It Matters
Shaft lean is a key differentiator between amateur and professional ball striking. Proper forward lean with irons creates compression, optimal launch, and consistent distance control. Excessive lean or flipping produces inconsistent contact and distance.
