Roll
The distance the ball travels on the ground after landing.
Full Definition
Roll is the distance the ball travels along the ground from first bounce to where it stops. It's determined by landing angle (steeper = less roll), spin rate (more spin = less roll), ball speed at landing, and ground conditions (firm = more roll, soft = less).
Optimal RangeGeneral guidance based on tour averages. Your optimal range depends on swing speed, physical attributes, and individual technique. Many golfers succeed with metrics outside these ranges.
Driver: 20-40 yards | Irons: 5-15 yards | Wedges: 0-10 feet
Why It Matters
Roll is why you need to know your landing zone, not just total distance. High spin, steep landing angle shots check up quickly. Low spin, shallow landing shots run out significantly.
Related Terms
Total Distance
The complete distance from impact to where the ball stops rolling.
Carry Distance
How far the ball flies through the air before first landing.
Landing Angle
The angle at which the ball descends when it lands.
Spin Rate
How fast the ball rotates around its axis, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM).
