Ball Speed

The speed of the ball immediately after impact with the clubface.

Full Definition

Ball speed is how fast the golf ball is traveling immediately after being struck, measured in miles per hour (mph). It's the primary determinant of distance—faster ball speed means longer shots. Ball speed is influenced by club speed, smash factor (strike quality), and to a lesser extent, ball construction.

Optimal Range

Driver: 140-170 mph | 7-iron: 115-135 mph | PW: 95-115 mph

Why It Matters

Ball speed is the single biggest factor in how far you hit the ball. While you can't always swing faster, you can maximize ball speed through better strike quality (smash factor). Each 1 mph of ball speed is worth roughly 2 yards of carry.
