Swing Direction
The horizontal direction the club is traveling at the bottom of the swing arc.
Full Definition
Swing direction measures the horizontal direction of the clubhead's movement at the lowest point of the swing, relative to the target line. It differs from club path, which is measured at impact. A positive swing direction means the club is moving right of target (for a right-hander); negative means left. The relationship between swing direction and club path indicates whether you're hitting the ball early or late in your swing arc.
Optimal RangeGeneral guidance based on tour averages. Your optimal range depends on swing speed, physical attributes, and individual technique. Many golfers succeed with metrics outside these ranges.
-5° to +5° for most shots
Why It Matters
Swing direction helps diagnose where in your swing arc you're contacting the ball. If swing direction and club path differ significantly, you may be hitting the ball too early (before low point) or too late (after low point), affecting strike quality.
