Spin Axis
The tilt of the ball's spin axis, which determines curvature direction.
Full Definition
Spin axis describes the orientation of the ball's rotation relative to vertical. A perfectly vertical spin axis (0°) means pure backspin with no curve. A tilted spin axis causes the ball to curve—tilted right means fade/slice spin, tilted left means draw/hook spin. The more tilted the axis, the more the ball curves. Note: When hitting into a net, some launch monitors display "Spin Axis (Sim)"—this is calculated from face-to-path relationship rather than directly measured from ball rotation.
Optimal RangeGeneral guidance based on tour averages. Your optimal range depends on swing speed, physical attributes, and individual technique. Many golfers succeed with metrics outside these ranges.
-5° to +5° (negative = draw, positive = fade)
Why It Matters
Spin axis explains why shots curve. Even with high spin rates, a vertical spin axis produces a straight shot. Understanding spin axis helps you diagnose whether curvature comes from face angle, club path, or both.
