Face Angle
The direction the clubface is pointing at impact, relative to target.
Full Definition
Face angle measures where the clubface is pointing at the moment of impact, relative to the target line. A positive face angle means the face is open (pointing right for a right-hander); negative means closed (pointing left). Face angle is the primary influence on where the ball starts—roughly 75-85% of start direction comes from face angle.
Optimal RangeGeneral guidance based on tour averages. Your optimal range depends on swing speed, physical attributes, and individual technique. Many golfers succeed with metrics outside these ranges.
-2° to +2° for straight shots
Why It Matters
Face angle is the most important factor in determining where your ball starts. The new ball flight laws confirm that the ball launches primarily where the face is pointing, not where the club is swinging. Control your face, control your start line.
