Club Speed
How fast the clubhead is moving at impact, measured in mph.
Full Definition
Club speed (or clubhead speed) is the velocity of the clubhead at the moment of impact. It's the primary input that determines potential distance—faster club speed means higher potential ball speed. However, club speed alone doesn't guarantee distance; strike quality (smash factor) converts speed into ball speed.
Optimal RangeGeneral guidance based on tour averages. Your optimal range depends on swing speed, physical attributes, and individual technique. Many golfers succeed with metrics outside these ranges.
Driver: 85-115 mph | 7-iron: 75-95 mph | PW: 70-85 mph
Why It Matters
Club speed is your distance potential. While you can't always control it, knowing your average club speed helps you understand your realistic distance expectations. A 100 mph driver swing with a 1.48 smash factor produces about 148 mph ball speed.
